Planes used for a service ...( Airmail )

The first airmail service was started in America on May 15, 1918. The planes used were wartime Curtiss DH-4 Jenny training planes. They could carry 300 pounds and had a top speed of 90 miles per hour and a range of 350 miles. The plane was slow, did not fly well in bad weather, and was costly to operate. The cost of airmail was twenty-four cents per ounce. Remember that a worker got only $0.75 an hour at that time.
