Community Services
The principal thrust of the club could be said to be public service and emergency communications using amateur radio technology. Approximately half of our members are active in emergency service either with the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department's Disaster Communications Service, the Peninsula Volunteer Alert Network (PVAN), which is the emergency communications service for the city of Rancho Palos Verdes; or the Neighborhood Amateur Radio Team (NART) which provides the emergency communications service for the city of Palos Verdes Estates. In 1996, the club completed a project to provide emergency communications for all the schools within the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District. This effort involved the installation of equipment at all school sites plus administration and maintenance facilities. Several private schools on the Palos Verdes Peninsula have also joined this project.
Members of the PVARC also conducted special classes to enable staff from all the schools to obtain their FCC license and trained them on the operation of the equipment. DCS and PVARC club members provide support for school personnel for this emergency radio system including their monthly drills.
To further support the growth of amateur radio, club members conduct classes in radio licensing. These classes are given free of charge, several times a year enabling interested citizens to obtain their FCC license. Classes are not limited to Palos Verdes residents and we regularly see attendees from all areas of Los Angeles County.
Communications for the annual Palos Verdes Half-Marathon (previously the Palos Verdes Marathon), the Rolling Hills Estates 5K / 10K race, the Community Helpline Bike Tour, the 62-mile RAT Beach Bike Tour, and the 5-mile "Conquer the Bridge" race across the Vincent Thomas Bridge in Los Angeles Harbor, and other organizations, are provided by the club enabling necessary safety and logistic support for the participants.
