REFUSE AND RECYCLING

Where can I drop off my electronic waste?

Electronic waste, or E-waste, is consumer electronic equipment near the end of its useful life such as computer monitors and televisions.  By law, E-waste items may not be a part of your everyday waste collected by the City trash hauler.  Eligible items include VCRs, stereos, fax machines, copiers, computer keyboards and cellular telephones.

A free electronic waste drop-off is available for Palos Verdes Estates residents at City Hall from 8-12, Monday through Friday.  Simply park on Palos Verdes Drive West near the “Electronic Waste” sign and ask for assistance from someone within the Streets and Parks Department.

Who is our trash hauler and how do I report a problem?

Effective December 1, 2007, the City contracts with Athens Services for its refuse and recycling.  Any problems or concerns may be reported to (888) 853-5110.   We recommend getting the dispatcher’s name when you call in case future assistance is required.  If that does not resolve the problem, please contact City Hall.

Can I place my trash cans in the front yard the night before my trash pick-up day?

No.  The Palos Verdes Estates Municipal Code prohibits the placement of refuse containers adjacent to the street or on City Parkland, even on collection day. The ordinance requires that the containers are to be kept in a concealed trash area on the property where the City’s approved refuse hauler retrieves them and returns them after emptying.  Please contact the City Code Enforcement Officer at (310) 378-0383 ext. 2209, if you have any questions or concerns.

What recycled materials are collected and do they need to be separated?

Athens Services provides each resident with two blue 32 gallon recycling containers that are collected every other week on your regular waste collection day.  Acceptable recyclables include:  Glass (all glass food and beverage jars and bottles without metal lids), plastics (clear, opaque, or colored containers, NO bags or ties), metal (aluminum, tin, metal, steel and bi-metal), and paper (newspapers, junk mail, magazines, paper egg cartons, paper grocery bags, etc.).

Yard waste recycling is also a part of the PVE recycling program.   Athens Services provides two green 32 gallon containers (specifically labeled for greenwaste) that are collected once per week on your regularly scheduled collection day.  You may recycle an unlimited amount of yard waste as long as the materials are in similar containers that are clearly marked “yard waste.”  Acceptable greenwaste includes:  grass, leaves, pruning, weeds, vegetation, twigs and small branches. Bundles, no longer than 36” and wider than 18”, or more than 30 pounds are also accepted.  Please place bundles next to your greenwaste containers.

Additional blue and green containers may be requested at no charge by contacting Athens Services directly.  For more information regarding the City’s recycling program, or to request additional containers, please contact Athens Services at (888) 853-5110.
