Computer Terms
PC—Personal Computer; a small computer designed for individual use.
operating system: the ‘brains’ of the computer; without an operating system the computer would be useless.
RAM: random access memory that the computer uses to run its operating system and software (1)
hard disk: is the information storage area inside your computer.
floppy disk: a portable little storage devices
mouse: is a hand held input/output device connected to your computer that allows the user to communicate with the computer.
WWW: World Wide Web is a subset of the Internet. The pages of the web are connected like threads of a large spider web, allowing the user to jump from one page to the next by following its thread.
modem: is an internal or external input/output device connecting your computer with your phone line allowing the user to connect with the Internet, send a fax, etc.
CD-ROM: Compact Disk Read Only Memory; is a compact disk containing large amounts of information. When a CD-Rom program is used by a computer the computer can access software with large amounts of graphics, sound and video without having to load it on the hard drive.
multimedia: is software/hardware that combines sound, images, and movies to create a more interesting end result; web page, presentation, software, etc.
interactive: means that the user and the computer are interacting. The user types in some info or clicks on an object and the computer responds to that input.
software: a program that enables a computer to run games, databases, word-processing, navigate the web and so much more.
