Rope-burning puzzle

You are given two ropes, and told that each rope burns (from one end to the other) in exactly one hour. However, the ropes will not burn at a constant rate - they seem to be thicker at some parts and thinner at other parts.

You are asked to measure a period 45 minutes using the ropes and a matchbook.
