Dear Parents and Friends,
D...dauntless, decisive, dependable, DEVOTED
A...admired, adventuresome, astute, athletic, AMIGO
D.....distinctive, doting, deftness, DANDY
All
the above characteristics were observed in our special guests yesterday.
Ask any child and they will tell you that to have more than 100 males on
campus creates a most special day. And the energy and playfulness that
all of us enjoy and need is present in every room.
One can see Dad and Special Friends attempting to solve the math problem of the day, squirming somewhat when wondering if the next word in the Spelling Bee will be as difficult as acquiesce (let alone "potato") And pictures of planes, clay structures of animals, and good sports in games are evident on both campuses. We truly thank you for giving of yourself not only to your child or friend but all the Heritage Children. Just don't wait a year to come back. You add so much to the day. A big thank you to our room parents for providing morning snack.
For our fourth and fifth grade parents there is an opportunity to visit Chadwick School and Rolling Hills Preparatory School in the next few weeks. Tours are being given at Chadwick on October 13th, 20th, and 27th and November 3rd, 10th, and 17th at 8:30 am. Discovery Evening with Peter McCormack, Headmaster of Rolling Hills Preparatory School will be held in the PHS Learning Center at 7:00 on Tuesday, November 2nd. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about these two fine schools that are sister schools to PHS in the California Association of Independent Schools.
HARVEST FAIR is just around the corner, Sunday, October 24th at 11:00, Elementary Campus. This special celebration of Families and Fall Fun unites the entire community. Former students and families return and it is truly a glorious day. If you can help prior to the Fair, please call the office or Cathy Cramer at 373-3559 or Jody Browning at 377-8129. Your assistance is needed the day of the Fair to set up the game and activity areas or at the end of the Fair. This is indeed an excellent way to meet other parents and just have a good time doing good things for our children.
If I may, I would like to ask your cooperation in supporting the PHS rule concerning items brought to school from home. We ask that no "toy" item be brought to school that costs more than $5.00. That includes a combination of items that would equal five dollars. Also, there have been several incidents of students trading Pokemon cards and cards disappearing. The children should not bring the Pokemon cards to school. There are just too many complications surfacing and too many upset children. Thank you for helping us with this concern.
Student Council Elections will be held on Thursday, October 21st. The installation of the Council will take place on Friday, November 5th at Opening Ceremonies. We hope that the Mayor of our City will be present to install the 1999/2000 Representatives to the PHS Student Council.
More info to come.
IN OUR COMMUNITY: The 27th Peninsula Music Fair sponsored by the Los Angeles Philharmonic will be presenting, A MILLENNIUM OF MUSIC. This marvelous festival takes place on the Chadwick Campus. It is truly a wonderful experience for all. And mark your calendar for the Peninsula Friends of the Library Book Sale to be held on October 23rd in the library at Miraleste from 10:00 until 3:00.
May I close by expressing what a pleasure it was to welcome you to Back To School Night. I know the PHS Faculty appreciates your interest in your child's class and the goals that are set for the year. As always, our Room Parents provided a wonderful feast for all. Just my kind of meal - JUST DESSERTS!

NYGAARD NEWS:
Welcome back to PHS and a warm welcome to all our new families. My name is Kim Nygaard. I am the PE Teacher for grade's K-5th. I have been here at this school for 14 years teaching our children. I have a girl in Kindergarten and a little boy attending our Preschool.
Each month a PE Calendar is submitted to the newsletter for your info. This can help you to prepare for proper shoes, clothing and comfort for your child. On warm days you may want to send a water bottle with your child's name on it. I have lots of fun skills, games and activities planned for October. We will be covering: Rhythms- even/uneven tempo's, light/strong tempo's, sudden/sustained tempo's, exploring time & energy, and group rhythms. Ball Skills- catching, throwing and bouncing. Jump Rope Skills-Basic "How to" front and backwards. We will also be starting our "PE Teacher of the Day!" The children just love this and it helps on their leadership skills, conflict resolutions and self-confidence. I go right down the alphabet. One child a week is chosen to be the PE Teacher. He/she will warm up the class, choose a game or activity, sit the class down at the end, line them up and resolve any conflicts which may have occurred. Also, that child's name with his/her activity or game will be put into our school's newsletter and be awarded with a certificate. The 4th and 5th graders will fill out a lesson plan and evaluation for themselves.
Box Tops for Education:
By now you are probably wondering why your child is asking you to save the box tops off your cereal or yogurt. This is the 3rd year with this program. Our 1st year we collected 688 Box Tops, last year 2,000 making almost $500 for our school to order new PE and recess equipment. Each Box Top is worth 10 cents. All you have to do is look on your boxes for the "Box Top for Education" label and cut it our. Put your child's name on the back and return it to child's teacher or myself. I hold a little contest and each month the class with the most box tops get to have an extended PE and a special treat prepared by me. If the Pre-school or Pre-K wins, I will go to their campus and play some games and give them a special treat. We even involved the faculty. The office staff has already joined in this year. So far there have been 676 Box Tops turned in. Thanks to all who have been saving them over the summer!! I'm so proud! All of these will go towards the October totals. An update of the classes will be posted in the next newsletter. I've attached a copy of some of the foods you can find box tops on.
Afterschool Sports:
I am so excited to be back with the Afterschool Sports Program. Anne Ibarra-Bobich and I will be alternating the program and are looking forward to a great year! The Afterschool Sports Program runs once a week on Thursdays for 4 weeks. The Kindergarten will be Thursdays from 2:30-3:05, at their campus and the 1st-5th grades will be Thursdays from 3:15-4:00 at the elementary campus. We teach the basic skills, condition the children and just have loads of fun! We encourage good sportsmanship, fun and cooperative play. Two of our biggest units are Rollerskate/Blade and Splash. Others include: Field hockey, Team games, Softball/T-ball, Soccer, Flag football.
Our first program will be "Rollerskating/Rollerblading. The
Children DO NOT have to know how, but it helps to be stable on skates. I will help them with the basics: stopping, forward, front to back, backwards, back to front, turns and for the older and more advanced: timed obstacle courses! Helmets ARE required for all skaters no matter what the age is. It's also a good idea to send along knee, elbow and wrist guards. Of course safety is our #1 concern. No helmet...no skate! Please see the attached permission slip to sign and return with your check. The cost is $30.00 for the 4 weeks made out to PHS. Please return on or before Wednesday, October 6th.
Thanks, and come have some fun!! Our first Afterschool Sports Program is here...Come be a part of this exciting event! (Thursdays - Oct. 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th)
