Bali: The Worlds Best Kept Secret Paradise

    by Shelley Stockwell

If you were a movie producer and needed a Garden of Eden, where would you shoot location shots?

Such a spot would, of course, have to have it all; lush green fertile land, dramatic mountains, glorious sunshine, sandy beaches, and crystal clear water laden with brilliantly colored critters. People; happy, beautiful, creative and full of celebration. If you spun the earth as a great crystal ball one such singular place would catch your eye. One point of purest light; Bali, Indonesia.

Balinese Temple Here, there is no word for art. Because for the Balinese life is an art form. They joyously weave spirituality with dance, song, music, painting and wood carving. No matter what each does for their work they come home to do art. Creativity is a meditation to God. They might paint a glorious painting with a single bristle of a brush for two years and then not sign their name. For how can you sign devotion to God?

Locals call Bali the beginning or "morning of the world" and for good reason. The green terraced volcanic mountains are a powerful vortex of sacred energy. Just step off the plane and something happens to you. You sink into this secret paradise like familiar warm slippers. It's no wonder seekers from around the world dream of Bali. Its special consciousness enhances inner harmony and spiritual evolution. Bali is just south of the equator and the temperature is tropical, with high humidity, between 60 and 90 percent. May is dry season, but it can rain any time. When it does, locals laugh, pick a giant leaf from a nearby plant and keep walking. Even money feels magical here. The average waiter makes fifty cents an hour yet no tipping is required. Prices are ridiculously low for gorgeous art; paintings, stone and wood carvings and handmade Ikak fabrics. No beggars here; everyone eats well and joy is the tone of everyday.

How do these people do it? What is their secret? It must be the natural abundance and respect of the land and the way the Hindu Balinese lovingly embrace conflict. Conflict is seen as a chance to create harmony with others to assure that this is their last incarnation. Bali is the only Hindu society in all of Southeast Asia. Despite past Dutch occupation, a 1000 plus surrounding Islamic islands and an Indonesian Government that would like to unify beliefs, nothing dampens the faith or rituals of these amazing pleasure seekers. Temple festivals bring tears to the eye. Imagine yourself parading down the road with hundreds bearing 5 feet tall crowns of food offerings. A bamboo gamelan plays melody as you enter the Mother Temple and a smiling dancing elder bids you enter . We found ourselves dropped to our knees before an fifteen foot tower of food with a holy man anointing us with rice, flowers and sacred water. Wide eyed children come to smile. You are beautiful say their eyes and laughter. Children of Bali
A statue of the barong It's not unusual; to be invited home to a local tooth filing party where a young women's canine teeth are evened off as to send away underworld demons. On our last trip we were invited to a cremation; a wild festive bash to send a Brahman man home for the final time. Balinese food comes in three categories- Indonesian, Chinese, and Continental. Breakfasts are usually banana pancakes, watermelon and pineapple smoothies, eggs and toast. Rijstaffel is a delicious feast made by combining dozens of tiny bowls filled with coconut, nuts, vegetables, fruits and meats (if you like) with fresh rice.

What's in a name? The Balinese are named according to their caste. And though caste is important to your chance of spiritual exaltation, it doesn't affect your income or political status. At the bottom of the heap is the Sudra caste. Every Sudra child is named by their birth order. The first "Wayan", the second "Made" , the third "Nyoman" and the fourth "Ketut". With number five you start all over again with "Wayan" . Since 90% of the people on Bali are Sudra, you meet a lot of people with the same name! Next comes the Satriya strata with the name "Ratu" for men and "Dewa Ayu" for women. At the top of the pile are Brahman men called "Ida Bagus" and women named "Ida Ayu" or "Dayu". They are the only ones who can become high priests.

According to Balinese beliefs, the head is the most sacred part of the body. A Balinese kiss means that a boy gets close enough to a girl's face to catch a whiff of her perfume. On May 3 - 17, 1997 we sniff the sacred scent of Bali; the morning of the world, in a creative and spiritual playshop we call The Artists Way In Bali. Will you join us? Together we'll enjoy Balinese temple dances, spiritual healers and sacred ceremonies. We'll paint, sketch, write poetry, dance, swim, snorkle and chortle.
