Tech Trek

AAUW CA inaugurated Tech Trek, a science, math, and computer camp for 7th grade girls, on the campus of Stanford University in June 1998. The Palos Verdes Peninsula Branch was delighted to send a charter camper to Tech Trek--Nina Agrawal, a student at Miraleste Intermediate School.

Between 1998 and 2009, a total of 47 campers have been sponsored by the Palos Verdes Branch. Most recently they have been selected from applicants attending Wilmington Middle School, Dana Middle School (San Pedro), and Avalon School.

The success of the program has allowed the camp locations in Southern California to expand to several different college campuses. These include UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, Whittier College, and now for the first year at UC Irvine.

For the summer of 2010, there are 12 campers being sponsored by the Palos Verdes Branch. They will have first hand exposure (well supervised!) to life on a college campus where they will be staying in a dorm and having meals in the cafeteria with their campmates. They have a busy schedule of core classes studying math and science subjects, field trips, and other fun activities. They will be surrounded by other academically oriented girls, and will meet many women in the math and science professions. There will be discussions on how best to prepare for college. The campers return with renewed self-confidence and enthusiasm about math, science, and computers!
